Pashupatinath Temple

The Pashupatinath Temple belongs to 400 B.C and remains a significant historical attraction in Nepal. This sacred Hindu temple is located in the north-east of Kathmandu Valley. The whole temple complex covers an area of 264 hectares where around 492 temples, 15 Shivalayas (shrines of Lord Shiva) and 12Jyotirlingas have been placed. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is also the national deity. This is a great place to experience the religious fervor of the locals towards their religion.

The Pashupatinath Temple stands on the UNESCO World Heritage Site and flaunts a bag full of serenity oozing temples, ashrams, idols and inscriptions. All these together make it the biggest holy complex in Nepal standing next to the Bagmati River.

The main shrine of the temple has golden roof whereas its all four sides are adorned with silver and wood sculptures. The temple is a fine example of Nepalese pagoda style of architecture which tells a lot about the local architectural style. There is also a gigantic golden statue of Nandi Shiva’s bull in the complex which catches the attention of all. Pashupatinath Temple hosts the biggest celebration of Maha Shivaratri when over 800,000 devotees gather here to celebrate this festival. The temple complex has four entrances. Only practicing Hindus are allowed to enter into the main temple; however, other parts of the complex are open to all visitors.
